Pokhara rolls out red carpet for internal tourists

POKHARA, April 14: Tourism entrepreneurs in Pokhara are introducing new packages and attractive discount offers, targeting domestic tourists on the occasion of New Year *2068 BS.

They are offering 30 percent discount in accommodation and 15 percent discount in food and beverage. The offer is valid till April 15.

Occupancy in hotels in this scenic lake city has jumped to above 60 percent from around 45 percent recorded last week. “Business in restaurants has also doubled,” Paudel, president of Regional Hotel Association of Nepal (REHAN) Pokhara said.

Entrepreneurs are hopeful that the special offers would help increase flow of internal tourists to Pokhara. Pokhara hoteliers have been giving preference to local tourists in recent years, thanks to their rising spending capacity.

Promotional packages are beneficial for tourism entrepreneurs and visitors alike. Attracted by the offer, Yubaraj Karki, who is in Pokhara to spend New Year´s Eve, said he has decided to extend his stay.

Tourists from Kathmandu, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar and Dharan are thronging this tourist hub to welcome New Year 2067 BS.

Entrepreneurs say arrivals of internal tourists started increasing with the beginning of Fewa New Year Festival from April 11. The five-day event, which is organized every year, features various musical and entertainment activities.

“Attractive offers and the festival itself are the major reasons behind rise in hotel occupancy,” Paudel added.

The major attraction of Fewa Festival is the food festival. Visitors can enjoy delicacies of five-star to ordinary restaurants at the same venue at Basundhara Park.

“We are always trying out new things to increase number of visitors. This is our attempt to give our visitors new taste during every New Year,” said Hari Sharma of Pokhara Village Resort.

REHAN plans to develop the event as an annual event in Nepal´s tourism calendar by promoting tourism through food and culture.
