Thousands in India line up to see Sai Baba´s body

PUTTAPARTI: Thousands of devotees are thronging to the southern Indian headquarters of revered Hindu guru Sathya Sai Baba a day after his death.

Sai Baba had been on breathing support and dialysis for nearly a month in a hospital near his ashram, or spiritual retreat, before he died Sunday at the age of 84.

His body was placed in a glass casket inside a large hall at his ashram. On Monday, hundreds of volunteers guided mourners in orderly lines around the flower-bedecked coffin. A life-size portrait of the guru in his trademark orange robe stood over the casket.

Sai Baba had a huge following, with ashrams in more than 126 countries.

His body will lie on display through Tuesday, and a funeral with state honors is planned for Wednesday morning.
