Centara Comes to Bali

Centara Hotels & Resorts signed a management contract that will initiate the opening of its first property in Bali, the Centara Grand Nusa Dua Resort & Villas.


The new Centara property is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and its soft opening is scheduled for December 2011, with the grand opening slated to be in 2012. Centara Hotels & Resorts President Mr Gerd Steeb was quoted in TTG Asia as having said that Bali represents their fifth overseas destination and follows the successful opening during the past 18 months of properties in the Maldives, Indian Himalayas, the Philippines and Vietnam.


The new property will be located in Nusa Dua, and will feature 76 guestrooms and 14 villas. The resort’s amenities include an Indian restaurant, an all-day dining restaurant, a lounge bar, a club lounge, kids’ club, a spa, a fitness centre, two swimming pools, and meeting rooms.

Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia Seal the Deal

Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia signed a landmark agreement to embark on a long-term alliance.


Through this new agreement, the two airlines will be able to conduct mutual codesharing on international and domestic flights, offer reciprocal frequent flyer programme benefits and lounge access to passengers, as well as have cooperative sales, marketing and distribution activities and coordinated schedules between Singapore, Australia, and beyond. Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Mr Goh Choon Phong was quoted in eTravel Blackboard Australia as having said that the partnership with Virgin represented a significant opportunity for the airline that would provide its passengers with a first-rate, integrated travel experience on an enlarged network.


The first stage of the agreement is set to take effect on 1 August 2011.

Starwood to Open One Hotel Every Week in China

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has revealed plans of opening one hotel every two weeks in China this year.


Starwood has more than 70 existing hotels in China and continues to expand with 90 new hotels in its pipeline. Starwood President and CEO Mr Frits van Paasschen was quoted in eTurbo News as having said that China continues to be the richest source of new Starwood travellers with enrollment in their Starwood Preferred Guest loyalty programme jumping 71% due to the strength of their growing hotel portfolio and distinct brands that resonate with Chinese travellers.


The Starwood Senior Leadership Team, which consists of President and CEO and the company’s top executives, will also be moving to China for a month-long managerial exercise, starting June 8 to July 11, 2011. This relocation is deemed to reflect the company’s unprecedented growth in China.

Malaysia Airlines Connects with oneworld

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) announced its decision to join the oneworld alliance in late 2012.


By joining the oneworld alliance, MAS will be able to tap into the alliance’s global coverage of almost 950 destinations in 150 countries and also integrate its Enrish frequent flyer programme with other oneworld alliance member airlines. MAS Managing Director and CEO, Mr Tengku Azmil Aziz, was quoted in TTG Asia as having said that they have carried out careful analysis of the global airline groups and oneworld is clearly the best option for MAS. Aziz added that oneworld will allow MAS to fast-track its own expansion plans.


MAS already has existing code-shares with oneworld partners Cathay Pacific and Royal Jordanian, and will soon expand bilateral links with other oneworld member airlines.

The Heritage Institute of Hotel & Tourism (HIHT) was awarded the Best Hotel Management Institute in India at the Brands Academy Education Excellence Awards Ceremony 2011.
