Lufthansa Uses Biofuel on Commercial Flight

Lufthansa introduced the world’s first daily commercial passenger flights using biofuel. This follows ASTM’s approval of the use of this type of fuel last July 1. The airline will use biofuel blen using 50% Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) on its four return daily flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt.

Lufthansa CEO Christoph Franz was quoted in eTurbo News as having said that Lufthansa is the world’s first airline to utilise biofuel in daily flight operations which is a further consistent step in the sustainability strategy that Lufthansa has been pursuing for years. Franz added that they want to secure future sustainable mobility by conducting research and development work today.

The daily flights is planned to run for six months as part of the ‘Burn Fair’ R&T project to study the long term impact of sustainable biofuels on aircraft performance.
